B - Grade Baby Sulcata Tortoise Geochelone sulcata Sulcata Tortoises, also known as African Spurred Tortoises among other names, are beautiful creatures with detailed carapace designs. Sulcatas are the third largest species of tortoise on the planet and they grow quickly in captivity. Sulcatas are native to areas just south of the Sahara desert – a dry, warm climate with a lot of natural sunlight. The habitat you provide should be built for your Sulcata with that in mind. Sulcata Tortoises, while native to desert climates, do need water. Not only will the Sulcata need a place to warm up and bask, but they’ll also need a place to cool off and water to drink. Sulcatas are highly active tortoises that like to exercise. Because they’ve evolved in the sparse desert, Sulcatas spent much of their time roaming the desert for food and water, making your Sulcata a very active tortoise!
