The African Side-Neck Turtle (Pelomedusa subrufa), also known as the African Helmeted Turtle, is a hardy and adaptable freshwater species native to sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Named for its unique sideways neck retraction and domed shell, this turtle thrives in warm aquatic environments and is well-suited for both beginner and experienced keepers. Its quirky behavior, including occasional land exploration and playful swimming, makes it a fascinating and entertaining pet.

  • Unlike most turtles, African Side-Necks cannot pull their heads straight back, instead tucking them sideways under the shell

  • These turtles are known to aestivate (enter a dormant state) during dry seasons in the wild by burrowing in mud

  • Their natural range includes a wide variety of habitats, from shallow rivers and swamps to temporary rain pools
