Ethical Shipping Temperatures for Turtles & Tortoises

Why Weather Matters and How We Ship Responsibly
Shipping live reptiles is not the same as shipping products. Turtles and tortoises are living, breathing animals, and their health depends entirely on temperature control during transit. Ethical reptile shipping starts with one core principle: if conditions are unsafe, we don’t ship.
Why Temperature Is So Critical for Reptiles
Turtles and tortoises are ectothermic (often called “cold-blooded”), meaning they cannot regulate their own body temperature. Instead, their metabolism, immune function, digestion, and activity level are all controlled by the temperature of their environment.
When temperatures drop too low or rise too high during shipping, reptiles can experience:
- Immune suppression
- Respiratory illness
- Organ stress or failure
- Shock
- Increased risk of mortality
Unlike mammals, reptiles cannot “power through” temperature extremes. That’s why responsible shipping is not optional , it’s essential.
Our Ethical Shipping Temperature Standards
We follow strict, science-based temperature guidelines to protect every turtle and tortoise in our care.
40°F or Less — WE DO NOT SHIP
- Temperatures at or below 40°F are dangerous
- Risk of illness and death increases significantly
- Veterinary care does not recommend shipping until warmer temperatures arrive
*Orders will be placed on a weather hold*
40°F–70°F — Heat Required
- We use Uni-Heat 48-hour or 72-hour heat packs
- Insulated boxes will be used to retain warmth
- Heat packs will be placed at the top of the package with a peanut barrier in between to prevent overheating
70°F–85°F — Ideal Shipping Range
- No heat or cold packs required
- Lowest stress, safest range for transit
- Our preferred shipping window whenever possible
85°F–95°F — Cooling Required
- We use cold packs
- Cool packs prevent overheating and dehydration
- Peanuts will be used to create space, and holes will be punched in the sides of the boxes for ventilation
95°F or Above — WE DO NOT SHIP
- High risk of heat stress and fatal overheating
- Veterinary care does not recommend shipping until cooler temperatures return
*Orders will be placed on a weather hold*
Our Shipping Supplies & Packing Standards
To ensure safe transit, we use industry-best practices and materials designed specifically for live reptiles:
Shipping Containers
- Insulated shipping box with a minimum ¾” foam liner in cooler climates
- Non-insulated box when temperatures are warm and stable
Animal Containment
- Deli containers or cotton reptile bags, selected based on the size and species of turtle or tortoise
- Secure, breathable, and appropriately sized
Temperature Control
- Uni-Heat packs or cold packs, only when weather conditions require them
- Never used blindly — always based on forecasted temps
Packing Materials
- Biodegradable packing peanuts for insulation and shock absorption
Labeling
- Packing tape and shipping label
- Clearly marked: “Live Harmless Reptile”
- Turtle or tortoise species listed on the outside of the box
Weather Holds & Customer Care
Because animal welfare comes first:
- We do not ship when temperatures are below 40°F or above 95°F
- Orders may be placed on a weather hold for up to 45 days
- If a weather hold exceeds 45 days, you may request a refund by contacting our Customer Care Team via email
Weather holds are not delays — they are a protection measure.
Our Commitment to Ethical Reptile Shipping
We understand that waiting can be frustrating. But shipping a turtle or tortoise in unsafe temperatures can result in illness, suffering, or loss — outcomes we do not accept.
Ethical reptile care doesn’t stop at feeding and housing. It extends to every step of the journey, including shipping.
Thank you for trusting us to put animal welfare first — always.
If you have questions about weather holds, shipping windows, or your specific order, our Customer Care Team is always happy to help.
