Overview:

The Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) is a fast, sleek, and highly aquatic turtle found throughout the United States, southern Canada, and parts of northern Mexico. Known for its flat, leathery shell and the tiny spines along the front edge, this turtle is built for speed and agility in the water. It prefers sandy-bottomed rivers and lakes and spends much of its time buried in the substrate or swimming swiftly through open water. Best suited for experienced keepers, the Spiny Softshell requires a large, warm, and clean aquatic habitat.
