The Russian Tortoise is one of the more popular tortoises because of how hardy the species along with the fact that they never grow to be very large – only about 8 in. at the most. Russian Tortoises have beautiful carapaces with light tan, dark brown, and even yellow-green markings. They’re known by other names such as Horsfield’s Tortoise and Central Asian Tortoise.Russian Tortoises are strict herbivores that enjoy greens and grasses, requiring a low protein intake for optimum health. They’re used to an arid and dry climate where they tend to burrow into the sandy substrate to keep cool. Compared to other tortoises, Russian Tortoises are known to not be as shy as other species. They’re known for their appealing temperament and friendliness with keepers.
