They are known to feed from your hand with very little practice. Yellow bellied slider turtles are a perfect beginner turtle and an excellent community tank turtle. In the wild yellow bellied slider turtles are found in ponds, lakes, slower moving rivers and streams. Their range is from Virginia in the northeast down to sunny northern Florida in the south over to the sweet home of Alabama. Their Preferred water temperatures are mid-70s Fahrenheit. Basking temperatures should be kept between the high-80s and mid-90s Fahrenheit. They are great community turtles getting along with all sliders, maps, cooters, painted turtles and more. Yellow bellied slider turtles are mostly omnivorous. In the wild they enjoy eating vegetation, snails, tadpoles, small fish, crayfish, insects and insect larvae. In captivity we feed turtle pellets, small cut up pieces of fish, green leafy lettuce, grass shrimp and worms. However with that said you must remember to feed all your turtles a variety of different foods. Never feed just one type of food on a regular basis.
