Overview:
The Florida Softshell Turtle (Apalone ferox) is a large, highly aquatic freshwater turtle native to the southeastern United States, especially Florida. Easily recognized by its flat, leathery shell, long neck, webbed feet, and snorkel-like nose, this species is an excellent swimmer and spends most of its time in the water. Florida Softshells prefer warm ponds, lakes, canals, and slow-moving waterways with sandy or muddy bottoms where they can bury themselves. Their large adult size, powerful bite, and active nature make them best suited for experienced turtle keepers.
